Current park notice (confirm official)

  • Angusvale Track / Horton’s Crossing — vehicle ford closed

Parks Victoria reports storm landslip on Angusvale Track past the Rock Creek camp area. Vehicles cannot use the Mitchell River ford between Angusvale Track and Hortons Track. Do not attempt to cross from Hortons Track for west-side access. Rock Creek camp remains accessible via Angusvale Track / Mitchell Views Track from Mitchell River Road — confirm on the official park page before you travel.

Corridor picture (not a substitute map)

For “Mitchell River map” planning you mainly need a simple corridor picture plus a proper highway or offline map:

  • Source / gorge — Mitchell River National Park: Den of Nargun, Billy Goat Bend, Angusvale, walking track and seasonal paddling
  • Plains — Lindenow district farming corridor; private land common
  • Estuary / lakes — Bairnsdale, silt jetties into Jones Bay / Lake King, then lakes towns

Region guides: upper · mid · lower. Access nodes: access hub.

River levels, weather & floods

We do not publish “current height” as a fixed number on this page. Heights and flood context belong to the Bureau of Meteorology East Gippsland flood / river pages and related BoM forecasts. After heavy rain, expect higher, dirtier, wood-laden water and changed access. Never drive into floodwater.

  • Pair every multi-day park or paddle plan with BoM forecasts and warnings.
  • Use VicEmergency for fire danger and incidents while travelling.
  • Use Parks Victoria alerts for track, camp and road status inside the park.

Paddling & rafting

Seasonal paddling and rafting on the Mitchell gorge is a highlight for prepared groups. It is also where static websites cause the most harm if they invent grades for your date.

  • Match group skill, leadership, craft and rescue practice to the day.
  • Strainers, portages and cold water matter more than Instagram colour.
  • Commercial outfitters and experienced clubs often hold better on-the-day intelligence than a general guide.
  • PFDs, throw bags, first aid and a shuttle plan are baseline, not optional extras.
  • Orientation: experiences · paddling from Angusvale · Angusvale access.

Camping

“Mitchell River camping” usually means one of a few different options. Match the night to the place:

Mitchell River National Park

Parks Victoria manages campgrounds such as patterns around Angusvale and Billy Goat Bend. Confirm bookings, fees, fire rules, generator rules, pets and vehicle entry on the Parks Victoria website. Peak periods fill; shoulder seasons still need weather respect. Also check whether internal park tracks and river fords are open — a landslip can close a crossing even when the campground itself is listed as accessible.

Commercial parks & town stays

Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Paynesville, Metung and Orbost offer caravan parks, motels and holiday units with showers and services. Better for mixed groups and weather backups than remote floodplain romance. See where to stay.

What not to do

Do not assume farm frontage or informal bank clearings are free camps. Leave-no-trace applies everywhere you are legally allowed to overnight.

Cultural protocols (Den of Nargun & Country)

The corridor is Gunaikurnai Country. The Den of Nargun is a place of high cultural significance. Visitors must not enter the cave. Stay on marked tracks, follow signs, and treat the site with respect. For formal Country information, start with Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation and Parks Victoria materials — we do not invent protocols.

Fishing (licence first, soft on limits)

The Mitchell and linked lakes waters attract recreational anglers, but this guide will not hard-code bag limits, size limits, closed seasons or method bans. Those belong to the Victorian Fisheries Authority.

  • Hold a valid recreational fishing licence unless you are in an exempt category.
  • Confirm rules for inland vs estuary/lakes contexts that apply to your exact water.
  • Respect private land and park fishing conditions where they apply.
  • Release practices, habitat care and litter discipline keep the fishery viable.

Region context without fake certainty: upper, mid, lower.

Lakes & estuary boats

Powerboats, larger hire craft and open-water lakes days are a different operating environment from remote gorge kayaks. Registration, PFD rules, speed limits and local waterway restrictions sit with Safe Transport Victoria and local notices. Wind on Lake King approaches can cancel a plan that looked perfect at the motel breakfast table.

More: lower Mitchell boating notes · experiences orientation.

Swimming

There is no corridor-wide “safe swim list”. Cold water, currents, submerged hazards, boat traffic and water quality after rain all matter. Supervise children constantly. Prefer gradual entries and known-local edges over jumping from logs into brown water after storms.

Private land & frontage

Much of the Mitchell is a patchwork of freehold land, farm infrastructure, council reserve and park. A dirt track to the water is not automatically public access. Respect fences, “Private Property” signs and farm biosecurity. When in doubt, use signed public recreation areas and park facilities listed under access.

Inside the national park, do not invent a shortcut across the river. Parks Victoria’s live change of conditions is the authority for fords, landslips and internal tracks — including the Angusvale Track / Horton’s Crossing vehicle crossing.

Hunting in parts of the park

Parks Victoria states that seasonal deer stalking is permitted in parts of Mitchell River National Park (described on the park page as the eastern section, with additional eastern-side notes south of Hortons Track) and that firearms are not permitted on the western side of the Mitchell River. We do not publish season dates or method rules as fixed law.

  • Confirm current maps, dates and methods with Parks Victoria and the Game Management Authority before any hunting trip.
  • Walkers, campers and paddlers should expect that hunting may occur in permitted zones in season — wear high-visibility clothing if you are in those areas, and stay on signed visitor sites and tracks.
  • Do not assume day-visitor picnic areas or the Den of Nargun loop are hunting grounds; follow official exclusions around camps and visitor sites.

Packing & trip plan checklist

  • BoM forecast + relevant flood / severe weather checks
  • Parks Victoria park page + changes of conditions listing if using Mitchell River National Park
  • VicEmergency if travelling in fire season
  • Valid fishing licence + live VFA notices if fishing
  • Water, sun protection, sturdy footwear, layers for gorge shade and lakes wind
  • Communications plan for remote days (do not assume full mobile coverage)
  • Shuttle / car-spot plan that does not rely on a closed river ford
  • Land plan B if wind, flood or track closure kills the main idea

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a fishing licence on the Mitchell?

Most recreational fishing in Victoria requires a valid recreational fishing licence unless you are in an exempt category. Confirm current rules, fees and exemptions with the Victorian Fisheries Authority before you fish.

What are the bag limits on the Mitchell?

We do not publish bag limits, size limits or closed seasons as fixed law. Those details change and are enforced from official Victorian Fisheries Authority notices for your date and water. Check VFA before you fish.

Is the river safe to paddle today?

Only a same-day assessment of height, weather, skill and group readiness can answer that. Check BoM river-height context and forecasts, match craft to conditions, and treat remote gorge runs as advanced when flow and wood load are high. This site is not a live gauge service.

Can I enter the Den of Nargun cave?

No. The Den of Nargun is culturally significant for Gunaikurnai people. Visitors must not enter the cave. Follow Parks Victoria and on-site guidance.

Where can I camp?

Use Parks Victoria camps in Mitchell River National Park when booked and open (for example patterns around Angusvale and Billy Goat Bend), commercial caravan parks and clearly signed public recreation areas. Check current change-of-conditions — vehicle access between park sides can close after storm damage. Much river frontage is private land — camping anywhere on the bank is not legal by default.

Is swimming safe?

People do recreate in river and lakes edges, but cold water, currents, submerged wood, soft banks, boat traffic and variable water quality mean there is no single safe answer for the whole corridor. Prefer known-local spots, supervise children constantly, and never swim near strained wood or after heavy rain without checking conditions.

Where do I check flood and fire risk while travelling?

Bureau of Meteorology for weather and flood warnings; VicEmergency for incidents and fire danger; Parks Victoria for park closures. This site does not issue emergency advice.

Do lakes boating rules apply on the upper gorge?

Maritime safety culture always matters, but craft type, water character and local rules differ between remote river paddling and Gippsland Lakes powerboating. Confirm Safe Transport Victoria requirements for your vessel and read local waterway information for lakes days.

Can I drive across Horton’s Crossing?

As of the 23 August 2026 review, Parks Victoria still reports that storm landslip on Angusvale Track past Rock Creek prevents vehicles using the Mitchell River ford between Angusvale Track and Hortons Track. Do not attempt to cross from Hortons Track for west-side access. Confirm the official park page before you travel — this site is not a live closure feed.

Is hunting allowed in Mitchell River National Park?

Parks Victoria says seasonal deer stalking is permitted in parts of the park (typically the eastern side) and that firearms are not permitted on the western side of the river. We do not publish season dates. Confirm Parks Victoria and the Game Management Authority before any hunting trip, and walkers should treat permitted zones as shared landscape in season.
