How to choose a base

  • Den of Nargun / Billy Goat Bend day trips? Sleep in Bairnsdale unless you have a booked park camp.
  • Multi-day paddle or walking track? Plan park camps and shuttles first; use Bairnsdale for pre- and post-trip services.
  • Park day + lakes recovery weekend? Bairnsdale night one, lakes town night two — or reverse if weather flips the order.
  • Lakes-only leisure? Paynesville, Metung or Lakes Entrance without forcing a gorge drive every morning.
  • Far East Gippsland loop? Orbost as a connector, not the primary Mitchell bed.

Town-by-town stays

Bairnsdale

Best full-service default for Mitchell River National Park day trips, Den of Nargun logistics, silt-jetties viewing and grocery runs before remote camps. Motels, apartments, caravan parks and food density make mixed groups happier than forcing everyone into a gorge camp on night one.

Pros

  • Full services
  • Park day-trip base
  • Food & fuel density
  • Year-round inventory

Trade-offs

  • Not on a cliff lookout
  • Highway edges can be busy
Search Bairnsdale stays

Lakes Entrance

Lakes-focused nights when entrance township energy, broader dining and Gippsland Lakes tourism are the recovery plan after a gorge day. Ideal second-night base on a park + lakes weekend.

Pros

  • Tourism services
  • Dining mix
  • Lakes character
  • Family facilities

Trade-offs

  • Further from Den of Nargun
  • Peak crowds in holidays
Search Lakes Entrance stays

Paynesville

Quieter lakes-edge base near Lake King with boat-oriented culture. Strong when the group wants waterfront mornings without Lakes Entrance density.

Pros

  • Lakes-edge pace
  • Boat culture
  • Quieter nights

Trade-offs

  • Thinner restaurant strip
  • Still a drive to the national park
Search Paynesville stays

Metung

Village-scale Gippsland Lakes overnight with a slower, smaller-town feel. Inventory is limited — book ahead for weekends and school holidays.

Pros

  • Village scale
  • Relaxed lakes mood
  • Scenic nights

Trade-offs

  • Limited rooms
  • Fewer late dining options
Search Metung stays

Orbost

East-corridor overnight when linking the Mitchell story with far East Gippsland or Snowy River drives. Practical more than romantic for pure Mitchell itineraries — useful on multi-day East Gippsland loops.

Pros

  • East corridor position
  • Multi-day loop logistics

Trade-offs

  • Not the closest park base
  • Fewer Mitchell-specific vibes
Search Orbost stays

Lindenow

Mid-plains village on the gorge-to-Bairnsdale link. Thin inventory — useful for mid-corridor nights when you want something quieter than Bairnsdale, not as a full-service base.

Pros

  • Mid-corridor position
  • Plains character
  • Quieter than lakes towns

Trade-offs

  • Very limited rooms
  • Few restaurants
  • Services better in Bairnsdale
Search Lindenow stays

Sale

Larger west-approach service town for travellers stitching Melbourne / Latrobe Valley drives with East Gippsland. Logistics hub more than Mitchell romance — solid motel density and fuel.

Pros

  • Highway approach
  • Service density
  • Early start logistics

Trade-offs

  • Further from the national park
  • Not lakes-edge

National park camps

Mitchell River National Park camping (including patterns around Angusvale and Billy Goat Bend) is managed by Parks Victoria. Confirm live bookings, fees, fire bans, facilities and road access before you pack the esky. Park camps are not a substitute for town medical access or late grocery runs — stage those in Bairnsdale.

Booking tips

  • Peak summer, Easter and school holidays fill lakes towns and Bairnsdale mid-range rooms early.
  • If half the group hates camping, do not “surprise” them with a remote gorge night — split bases or pick Bairnsdale.
  • Build a weather backup: town bed holds value when wind kills lakes craft or storms close tracks.
  • Partner Booking.com links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you; official park bookings are never affiliated.
  • Itineraries that assume a specific bed: all itineraries.
