Who this day is for

First-time visitors who want a genuine national park walk without committing to multi-day packs or river craft. Works as a long day-trip from Melbourne if you leave early, or better as an overnight in Bairnsdale. Region guide: Upper Mitchell & National Park. Access notes: Den of Nargun access.

Packing & prep (night before)

  • Check Parks Victoria for Mitchell River National Park track status, fire rules and park alerts
  • Check BoM for East Gippsland weather; VicEmergency in fire season
  • Sturdy footwear, water, sun protection, snacks; layers for forest gullies
  • Fuel and supplies in Bairnsdale — do not assume remote retail
  • Offline maps / offline park page screenshots if mobile coverage is patchy

Day plan — Bairnsdale base

Morning — Drive into the park

  • Leave Bairnsdale with a full day buffer (wet roads and slow park access stretch times)
  • Follow current Parks Victoria directions toward Den of Nargun Picnic Area via the Bairnsdale–Dargo Road network
  • Arrive ready to walk — parking can fill on peak weekends

Midday — Den of Nargun Loop

  • Read all cultural and safety signs at the picnic area before you start
  • Complete the marked loop at a steady pace; tracks can be slippery after rain
  • Do not enter the cave; keep to formed tracks
  • Supervise children near water and steep sections

Afternoon — Optional Billy Goat Bend

  • If energy and daylight remain, continue to Billy Goat Bend lookout / day-use area when open
  • Respect cliff edges; wind and weather change gorge viewing comfort quickly
  • Skip the add-on if the loop took longer than expected — return with daylight

Evening — Bairnsdale recovery

  • Return to Bairnsdale for fuel, food and accommodation
  • Optional overnight so the next day can target silt jetties or a second park stop — see park + lakes itinerary

If you only have a half day

Prioritise Den of Nargun Picnic Area and the loop only. Do not force Billy Goat Bend on a tight Melbourne same-day return — East Gippsland distance is the constraint, not the walk length.

If the track is closed

  • Do not invent alternate routes through private land
  • Use Bairnsdale / lower river orientation (lower Mitchell) as plan B
  • Re-check Parks Victoria the next morning before reattempting
